Toolbar and mines

The toolbar smileys are explained below. They should be activated by left mouse clicks. If users forget the function of a button, the middle mouse button will produce a popup that gives a reminder.

Toolbar buttons and their smileys

Minestein: symbol for new game
Button 1: Start new game.


Minestein: symbol for hint request
Button 2: Give hint.


Minestein: symbol for apply hint
Button 2: Apply hint.


Minestein: symbol for give answer
Button 3: Give answer.

Button 4: Give solution.

All buttons: Success.


Minestein: symbol for failure
All buttons: Failure.




Exposing a mine

If a mine is exposed the game is lost. The figure legend explains the symbols an error reveals.

Figure 2. This screen dump shows a grid after a user has revealed a mine at 2,6. That mine is shown with a red background and all the ones that were still covered with a grey background. Any incorrectly flagged mines are shown as at position 7,8. The smileys look sad. They will also look sad if the user resorts to using the show solution button but will condone use of the hint and show answer buttons.
